Mother's Day is a special occasion celebrated around the world to honor the incredible women who fill our lives with love, laughter, and endless support. I was very blessed and fortunate to have a wonderful mother and role model in my life, I've come to cherish the simple yet heartfelt gestures she makes that are unforgettable. She made parenthood look easy - and I know that my brother and I were very challenging youngsters!
Last year, I shared the story from when my brother (a mischievous youngster) accidentally put dishwashing soap in our dishwasher, and the amount of bubbles is something I am unlikely to forget, we did have the best of intentions!
But that wasn’t the only story of wild and wacky things we tried to do to honor our mom. I remember another year, I was probably about 7, my brother was 9. With giggles and whispers, we had concocted a plan to show our appreciation in the most endearing way possible – by preparing a surprise breakfast in bed. We were preparing her favorite cereal (ok, our favorite cereal), getting the juice, flowers, pasta necklaces, and handmade cards placed on the tray when our mom surprised us! We were so focused on what we were doing, we didn’t hear her approach. When she said “good morning” we both were so startled that I dropped the bottle of orange juice, and my brother toppled the flowers in the modge-podge vase, it fell and broke.
"Happy Mother's Day?” We sheepishly said, while the shards of glass and sticky orange juice pooled at our feet.
What happened next was truly a testament to our mom’s good nature. She grabbed a few fruit loops from the bowl, and then laughed.
Amidst the chaos we had created, we had also created a memory. A profound moment that I believe has shaped my parenthood experience. I learned that the true essence of parenthood lies not in perfection but in the beautifully imperfect moments we share with our offspring. It's about embracing the unexpected, finding joy in the chaos, and cherishing the memories we create together.
We cleaned up the sticky mess together, and then sat at the kitchen table while our mom prepared pancakes and waffles, wearing her new necklace, beaming at the soggy and blurry homemade card.
