Do I Need to Use Distilled Water When Diluting Castile Soap?

My Dear Readers,

This question gets asked all the time, and it’s the best question!!

The quick answer is no. If you have safe water, and when you use regular soaps or detergents, your water lathers well, is clear and rinses off soap scum, you definitely can use tap water for all dilution recipes when customizing your Castile Soap.

So, then why do so many of our recipes call for distilled water?

What is HARD WATER?

Hard water is defined as the mineral content in water. Perfectly drinkable and safe for your family, hard water is the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium that is in your water supply. You may notice your water’s hardness based on if your soap doesn’t give great foam. Or, if you’ve washed your glasses, and they are left with spots.

But hard water can have some benefits, too. Humans need minerals to stay healthy, and the World Health Organization (WHO) states that drinking-water may be a contributor of calcium and magnesium in the diet and could be important.

What is SOFT WATER?

Soft water contains lower levels of calcium and/or magnesium than hard water. The decision to soften your water is a personal choice. Using soft water often results in shampoos and soaps lathering better, and resulting in glassware being clear with no soap residues. The addition of sodium to the water gives it the “soft” consistency that is quite apparent.

You can add external water softeners to individual appliances or to the main water system in your home.

Why use Distilled Water?

If you’re seeking precision when you’re customizing your Whole Naturals Castile Soap recipes, then when you’re measuring quantities of castile water with distilled water, your recipe will stay perfectly consistent. If you’re using tap water (hard or soft) you may find that you’ll adjust a bit of water (sometimes more or less) to get the consistency you need.

That’s the great part of Whole Naturals Castile soap – the flexibility and versatility to choose how you want to create your favorite recipe! Just remember: Castile soap is concentrated, so for every usage – around your home or around your body, make sure you dilute it!
